Dating back to around 1935, the cypress and heart pine structure sits among 14 acres of uplands with a large lawn and forest. It employs features including rain collection barrels, breezeways, and large porches and is equipped with a propane powered refrigerator and generator. An additional detached dwelling offers approximately 600 square feet for accommodations or storage. Located where East Pass meets Dan May Creek, the island is uniquely situated where fresh and saltwater meet. A short boat ride and you arrive in the Gulf for offshore fishing and diving pursuits. Suwannee Sound (the coastline between the mouth of the Suwannee River and Cedar Key) has been called the best fishing at Suwannee and maybe Cedar Key! Dan May Creek is one of the only creeks in the area that is deep enough to access at various tides with a shallow draft boat. You can find redfish year-round and black drum closer to East Pass in the estuarine waters and black bass farther up the creek. Dan May Creek is famous for wintertime seatrout fishing. Long before the lodge was built, the area was traversed by peoples dating to at least the tenth century A.D. Rich in history, Dan May Island has been part of the Lower Suwannee Archaeological Survey and is said to be in the vicinity of Fort Duval, the temporary stockade built to fortify the mouth of the Suwannee River in November 1826.
