The city of Milton, formerly known as Scratch Ankle, due to its propensity to grow briars, was also known as Milltown, because it had the greatest mill in the area. The community, officially incorporated in 1844, was also called “Scottman’s Anchorage” because of the lumber barges that used to traverse the Blackwater River. The community is the county seat of Santa Rosa County, which was established in 1842 and named after Santa Rosa Island, Florida.

Milton is home to some of the friendliest people in the world. This laid back community is surrounded by a rural setting of secluded forests, pristine waterways and gently rolling farmland. The city of Milton offers abundant opportunities for recreation and entertainment–all with one of the lowest costs of living in the United States.
Milton is a vibrant, progressive city, balancing small town charm and modern urban life. We honor our rich, cultural heritage and close relationship with the military with a large number of historic landmarks and attractions including Riverwalk Park, Gill-Bass Park, Veteran’s Memorial Plaza and Historic Bagdad Village. Since the area was settled in the early 1800’s it has been called many names – Scratch Ankle (beacuse of the briars and bramble that grow in the area), Jernigan’s Landing, Lumberton, Black Water, Hard Scrabble, Scottman’s Anchorage and Milltown.
